The legend of "De Biggenboom" (pig tree), tells a story about a golden cup, stolen
1473 by Oldenburger foot-soldiers from the church at Strackholt, a small
traditional village in East Frisia. The excited pastor followed the thieves and
was belaboured. Befor he could flee he cursed the soldiers an the
place where they had pitched their camp. However at this place (between Bagband und Strackholt), where once a mighty oak tree the drunken thieves gave shadow, since that day no more tree can grow prosperously. Nowadays an appel tree tries to grow up there, but it stays small, it looks miserable and will be withered like all the other trees before him. At this particular place, a memorial stone remembers on that incidence in the year 1473. |
